Professor R.F. Woollard, Director of British Columbia's family practice group, visited Torab Integrated Health Center

Dr. Bob Woollard, CCFP LM(Laval), Interim Co-Director, Family Practice Residency Program, Faculty of Medicine, the University of British Columbia, visited Torab Integrated Health Center, a center affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences.

During Dr. Woollard presence in Iran in order to familiarize himself with the methods of realization of family medicine program in Iran, education in providing health-services based on the 03 version, appropriate evaluation of family medicine plan and internship at the interns’ office; that is designed to illustrate diverse aspects of social accountability in health field, and fortify the social and family medicine courses in the medical students’ curriculum, he visited different sections of Integrated Health Center of Torab, affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences.


At the beginning of this visit, Dr. Rahimi, the Head of the Torab Health Center, welcomed the Professor and the delegation and presented the history of Torab health center to the visitors.


Upon the completion of the specialized meeting, Dr. Woollard and the accompanying group visited the immunization section, where vaccine prescriptions and injections are monitored, in addition, the Sieb system, then the mother and mother-infants unit, the childbirth and parenting education room, the nutrition room, the contagion diseases and cutaneous leishmaniasis unit, and the training section of this center were introduced to the visitors.  


The International Department of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences introduced each section’s duty and following this, Dr. Niyaei, the Director of the Education Development Center (EDC), stated that, on the Sieb system website, manually entering the information of the anonymous and Afghan refugees is possible. Moreover, there would be no shortage of service provision process for this group.   


He continued that in the general practitioner’s offices, there are regularly several fixed doctors and some interns who change their workplace periodically, according to the two-month internship course regulation determined by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education (every two weeks for two months) and they provide health services to clients.


He also suggested that in this center all clients should be examined for hyper pressure, diabetes, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, colorectal cancer, pap smear, breast cancer, and psychological disorders. 


At the end of the professor’s visit to this center, he expressed his gratitude for the services provided to the Tehran citizens and announced that each and every staff member in this center has his/her own role and, as a front line in the health care system, they should have interest and enthusiasm to best serve their clients.


He also pointed out that prevention in healthcare services should be prioritized over treatment, and based on evidence, this center is working correctly in the field of prevention and early diagnosis.
